Bring a piece of the desert into your home!
The Prickly Pink Collection reflects the vibrant colors of Tucson’s desert sunsets. I was inspired by the days spent surrounded by saguaros, exploring the harsh yet beautiful landscape of the desert. I used cochineal, an insect thriving on prickly pear cacti, to make the dye. Using a mortar and pestle, I ground the bugs into a fine crimson powder, which simmered for hours, eventually yielding a rich pinkish dye.
I prepared the fabric by scouring it, tannin-bathing it with oak, and mordanting it with alum and soda ash. Using a prickly pear stencil, I created on the computer, I drew a cactus design on the fabric with melted beeswax using the Batik technique. Once I finished the fabrics, I bundled them up, tied them tightly, and dyed them to create colorful tie-dye patterns.
My favorite part is untying the bundles to reveal the unique tie-dyed prints. However, my least favorite part is the final step of boiling out the stubborn wax. From the desert’s resources, the Prickly Pink Collection emerged, infused with the stunning colors of Arizona sunsets.

Although I created all of them using the same method, each one turned out uniquely beautiful. I have a few that are lighter pink with more white, and a few that are darker pink with less white. If you have a preference, please include it in the notes section during checkout.
